48 ANNUAL REPORT rendered as well in times past as at the present day to the College and the School respectively by four Principals in sue- cession by one and the same Head-Master of the School by all the members of the Academical Staff and by all the Officers of the College The Council accordingly invite the Court of Proprietors to join them in offering their grateful acknowledgments to those upon whose zeal efficiency and unanimity the well-being and progress of this great Institu- tion have in reliance upon God's grace and providence so much depended The Court of Proprietors will not need to be reminded that the fundamental principle of King's College London was that every system of general education for the youth of Christian community ought to comprise instruction in the Christian religion as an indispensable part without which the acquisition of other branches of knowledge will be con- ducive neither to the happiness of the individual nor to the welfare of the state This principle set forth in 1828 has been kept in view ever since and the success which under the Divine blessing has attended its realization in the course of thirty years is an encouragement for all time to come to persevere in the same path of Christian wisdom Sancte et Sapienter
