ANNUAL REPORT 47 at time when this discipline is peculiarly needed as safe- guard against prevailing dangers This most important result is due in great measure to the zeal learning ability and good judgment of Professor Plumptre the Chaplain of the College to whom this branch of teaching has been entrusted The Summer Session of the Evening Class Department though not presenting the same high numbers as those given above was yet in every way successful enabling some to continue studies they had already begun and affording an opportunity to them and others to enter on fresh subjects The financial position of the College is improved by the results of last year's receipts and expenditure to the extent of 527 9s lid and this sum would have been larger had it not been for some heavy payments of an exceptional character in fitting up new class rooms The Court will hear with satisfaction that the Council have been able to modify to certain extent the resolution passed few years back which imposed deduction of per cent on the well- earned salaries of the Members of the Academical Staff This deduction was not imposed without the deepest regret The Council consented to it only because it was beyond all doubt necessary In future the rule will be that sum of 500 per annum must be set apart towards the liquidation of the out- standing debts of the College and that if the balance of the ordinary receipts and expenditure does not amount to this sum the salaries of the Staff will then and then only be liable pro rata to make good the deficiency There is good reason for hoping that with great care as to the expenditure on the one hand and with diligence on the other so to keep up and spread the reputation of the College as to increase ts income in every department this deficiency may prove to be small charge compared with the burden of the per jent now removed The close of period of thirty years seems to call on the part of the Council for special recognition of the services
