11 ANNUAL REPORT During the past year the number of patients admitted into the Hospital amounted to 333 the number of Out-Patients who have received advice and medicine to 31 196 and the number of poor married women who have been attended during their confinement at their own homes to 624 The Council have learnt with much pleasure that propo- sition has been made to the Committee by which the useful- ness and efficiency of the Hospital will be greatly increased Some friends who have long observed the want of Lying-in Ward where Students of the College as well as Nurses might receive such sound and practical instruction as should fit them to become of the very highest value to the community in obstetrical cases-and where at the same time poor mar- ried women in addition to the best medical skill should receive the comforts and careful nursing so essential in their condition-have applied to the Committee with special offers as to bearing the entire expense to set apart distinct Ward to be placed under the care of Dr Farre the Professor of Midwifery at this College The Committee at once gratefully accepted the offer and the Council believe that this new and highly important addition to the usefulness of the Hospital- the establishment of Department in which King's College will stand alone amongst the General Hospitals-will shortly be in operation The Council must again record their deep sense of the unwearied zeal and devotion to the charitable and to this College all-important labours of the Committee of Manage- ment under the direction of Moore Esq their able Vice-Chairman for the past year The retrospect of King's College School during the past year has been highly satisfactory The number of pupils in the Classes throughout the three terms ending Lent 1861 has exceeded that of the three preceding by 68 and com- paring term earlier ending Michaelmas 1860 the increase was 101 Dr Major the able and indefatigable Head-Master reports that the pupils generally have been orderly and
