annual report 39 Occasional Students Brought over 490 Medical Department Evening Classes 555 Other Departments 43 606 School 410 Total 1506 The Theological Department continues to maintain and deserve its high character for sound and comprehensive teach- ing and for its practical adaptation to the sacred duties of the Christian Ministry The total number of Students who have received the Prin- cipal's Certificate during thirteen years is 312 of whom 120 were placed in the First Class at the filial Examination There has been no difficulty in obtaining titles indeed many more applications have been made by Incumbents throughout England than it was possible to provide for even out of the increased number of Students The conduct and diligence of the Students are entitled to the highest praise The Department of General Literature and Science although stationary in point of numbers has in no degree for- feited its claim to be one of the most efficient parts of the College For reasons stated in the last Report the destina- tion of the most distinguished Students is no longer confined to the Universities of Oxford Cambridge or London and consequently the list of Academical honours may appear scanty compared with the result of former years but it should be stated in compensation that honours equally bril- liant and solid advantages still more immediate are secured in other spheres of life by the same training which is adapted to the Universities and that success in open competition especially for appointments in the Civil Service of India
