116 APPLIED SCIENCES Order of the Course The practice of Civil Engineering and Architecture -how connected and how distinguished what works are classed under one branch of the practice and what under the other what works are exclusively Civil Engineering what exclu- sively Architectural and what are common to both the meaning and application of the term Design and what is neces- sary to the elaboration of Design for carrying it into effect The various arts and operations common to Civil Engineering and Architecture the Engines Machines Tackle Tools Im- plements and Materials generally required to aid and assist the artificer or operator independently of his own particular tools and the modes of using and applying such general auxiliaries the Tools and Implements used by the Excavator Earth-worker or Navigator and Miner and their uses the Tools and Implements used by the Bricklayer the Mason the Smith the Carpenter and by the other less important arti- ficers and operators respectively the modes of using and operating with such various Tools and Implements as they occur and the effects produced by their means The matters which are or which furnish materials for the purposes of the Constructor and for Constructions themselves how such matters are affected by the various influences to which they may be exposed as materials in or in aid of Constructions as heat and cold moisture and dryness the modes employed for protecting materials singly or in com- bination as or in Constructions from such influences as are disturbing or destructive or of counteracting such influences The qualities required in materials and which give value to the several matters which become materials available in con- struction how to distinguish such qualities in materials and how to apply materials with reference to their respective qualities The materials which possess requisite qualities and how to elicit and apply them in practice Combination and Construction in what they are concurrent and in what they differ Bond or the artificial disposition of materials to compel
