48 ANNUAL REPORT It may be interesting to those who have watched the progress of this work to indicate the subjects which have drawn the largest number of Students It is satisfactory to notice that for the most part they are those which involve most work on the part of the Student and so serve best the purposes of mental discipline Subject 1858-59 1859-60 French 161 218 Mathematics 124 152 Latin 105 147 Greek 74 104 English Language and Li- terature 88 93 German 47 81 Italian 10 22 History and Geography 30 56 Arithmetic 35 49 Natural Philosophy No class 55 Commercial Law 28 25 Political Economy No class 34 Drawing 15 28 Chemistry 20 29 There is but one opinion among all who have taken any part in the instruction of these classes as to the conduct of the Students from first to last it has been uniformly satis- factory marked by strong sense of the respect due to the discipline of the College The Professors and Lecturers feel that in the confidence and esteem which they and their pupils cherish reciprocally for each other there is at once the best proof that their work has not failed and the most satisfying reward for it The Council look forward to the future with well-grounded hope that there will be no falling off either in the real efficiency or in the material prosperity of this Depart- ment Tney are sure that in proportion to its success it will enlarge the usefulness and promote the welfare of the whole College
