annual report Rev Ayerst Caiua College Cambridge one of the first Scholars in King's College School 1846 has been appointed to the Head Mastership of St Paul's School Calcutta The Council are fully aware how much of this success they owe to Dr Major's indefatigable exertions and under him to the Masters generally and to the Vice-Master in particular The Rev Webster having after many years of faithful service resigned his office in the Division the Rev Standen has been elected in his room The progress of the Evening Class Department of this College during the past year has more than equalled the Council's expectations At the termination of the Winter Session of 1858-59 the number of Matriculated Students Students entering for four subjects exclusive of Divinity and coming under the general discipline and system of the College stood at fifty- five It has now reached 104 This increase is doubtless in part due to the regulations which were announced in December 1859 throwing open the Associateship and other privileges connected with the College to those who fulfilled the above conditions and there is much reason to rejoice that they have had the effect of closely attaching to the College so large body of earnest and well-conducted Students In the Class of Non-Matriculated Students taking one or more subjects there has been large though not propor- tionate increase the numbers being respectively-for the Winter Session 1858-59 323 and for that of 1859-60 445 It is noticeable that with this large addition to the total number of Students the average of subjects taken by each Student Divinity not included has exhibited but very small fractional variation each Student entering as nearly as possible for two distinct subjects The average attendance at the Divinity Lectures has in- creased from 80 to 148
