ANNUAL REPORT 45 within the walls of the Hospital and the foundation of Clinical Prize bearing his name at the College The vacancy at the Hospital occasioned by the retirement of Dr Todd was filled up by the appointment of Dr Beale as one of the Physicians to the in-patients whilst the vacancy occasioned in the out-patient Department by Dr Beale's promotion was supplied by the appointment of Dr Duifin and Dr Symes Thompson as Assistant Physicians In consequence of the great extension of the number of patients under the care of Dr Farre two Assistant Physicians for the Diseases of Women and Children Dr Tanner and Dr Meadows have been added to the staff of the Hospital Under the able superintendence of the Committee and its indefatigable Vice-Chairman Mr Cheere King's College Hospital has continued eminently to fulfil the objects for which it was founded The number of patients admitted into the Hospital during 1859 was 485 being slightly less than that of 1858 but greatly exceeding that of any other former year Six hundred and ninety-three cases of midwifery have been attended at the patients' own homes being slight increase on the number of last year The out-patients have numbered no less than 37 781 being an increase of 885 The average period during which each patient remained in the Hospital was 30 days and the average cost of each patient was 31 18s Id The total income of the charity during the past year excluding Legacies above 1002 amounted to 366 17 7c and the total expenditure was 402 3s Id The outstanding liabilities on December 31st 1859 amounted to 339 16s 5d The Committee state with the deepest gratitude that the Legacies to the Hospital for the past year amounted to nearly 000 The second and largest portion of the new Hospital is rapidly approaching completion and will be in fit state for
