42 ANNUAL REPORT Three former Students of this Department were amongst the successful Candidates in the examination for the Civil Service of India viz William Mitmott Tidt Clarence Bovtll Izon Arthur Coke Burnell The Rev Charles Elsee having in consequence of his appoint- ment as one of the Mathematical Masters at Rugby resigned the office of Lecturer in Mathematics Professor Hall has reverted to the original system and taken his full share of the Mathematical instruction and the Rev Howse has been appointed Assistant Lecturer in Mathematics Mr Horton Smith has resigned the office of Lecturer in Classical Literature and Mr Daniel former distinguished Student of the College has been elected to fill the vacancy In the last Report the Council had the satisfaction of announcing the foundation by endowment of the Tooke Professorship of Economic Science and Statistics This is the fitting place to inform the Court of Proprietors that the Rev Ε Rogers of Magdalen Hall Oxford Honorary Fellow of King's College has been elected the First Tooke Professor and that in accordance with the rules laid down he has been engaged since Christmas in delivering course of Lectures in the Department of the Evening Classes The Department of Applied Sciences is as flourishingasusual in point of numbers and efficiency The only event calling for particular mention in this Department is the amalgama- tion of the Military Department with it It was found after careful investigation that the subjects taught in the Applied Sciences Department formed with some exceptions suitable preparation for most of the Boards of Military examination modified scheme of instruction on this basis has been drawn up and appears thus far to have worked satisfactorily The special Military instruction is still under the able and zealous superintence of Major Griffiths aided by Mr O'Reilly
