ANNUAL REPORT 41 various ways admirably adapted to their wants In many instances at the special request of their parents they are exempted from Classical Studies and devoting all their attention to Mathematics History English Literature and Modern Languages they soon qualify themselves for the Examinations and obtaining their object quit the Classes at moment's notice Such results of course increase the reputation of the College though not in the old accustomed direction There is nothing unsound or discouraging in this state of things but it certainly diminishes the number of those who seek advancement in life by means of an Academical Degree Still it must not be supposed that there will ever be wanting supply of young men who wish to qualify them- selves for the highest distinctions at the Universities Still less must it be supposed that the Council have any thought of abandoning the old-established principle that relatively to almost all professions the great basis of an English gentle- man's education is the united study of Classics and Mathe- matics On the contrary they have recently re-affirmed their adherence to this principle by appointing the Rev Heywood who for the last seven years has most ably conducted the Lower Sixth Class in the School to be an Assistant Lecturer in Classics and by giving additional facilities for the uninterrupted study of Latin and Greek At the University of Oxford Mr Albert Dicey has obtained the Arnold Scholarship and Mr Murray Browne has been placed in the Second Class in Literis Humanioribus At Cambridge Mr Walter Bailey was Second Wrangler and Smith's Prizeman Mr Edward Ernest Bowen has been ×™ elected Fellow of Trinity At the University of London the following honours were obtained by former Students of this Department At the First Richard Charles Brown in Latin English and French At the Second Henry Nelson Capel in Mathe- matics At Matriculation William Cracroft Fooks in Classics
