GENERAL LITERATURE AND SCIENCE 79 -It is earnestly hoped that additional Subscrip- tions which may yet be received will enable the Council to increase the value of these Scholarships by extending the length of their tenure II One Scholarship is awarded for the highest profi- ciency in portion or portions to be defined of Modern History together with the English Language and Literature of one of those portions and the other Scholarship for the highest proficiency in the English Language and Literature of one or more periods to be defined together with the History of England at one of those periods The papers in the re- spective subjects to be set by the Professors of those subjects III These Scholarships are open to all Matriculated Students of King's College not being Associates and not belonging to the Theological Department who shall have completed not less than two and not more than nine Terms at the date of competition and to all Pupils who shall have been at least one year in the School IV The examination is held in the Lent or Easter Term of each year The payments will commence in the October succeeding the election and will be continued quarterly over one year pro- vided the Scholar has become an Associate of King's College London or shall during the three months preceding each Quarter-day the months of July August and September excepted have continued either to attend lectures as Ma- triculated Student of the College or as Pupil of the School or to pursue his studies at the University of Oxford Cam- bridge or Durham VI No one may be elected to either of these Scholar- ships more than once but both of them may be held together by the same Student and are tenable with any other King's College Scholarship VII All accumulations arising from lapsed resigned for- feited or non-awarded Scholarships will be invested for the purpose of increasing the Endowment Fund
