general literature and science 69 IV English Language Literature and Composition Modern History The Lectures are given on Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday from to and embrace English Literature Modern History and Composition The Lectures are divided into General and Special Of these the former occupying the first hours from 1J to 2J embrace the subjects which are necessary for general educa- tion the latter enter with greater fulness into the Literature or History of particular periods Attendance on the General Lectures comprising two on Language and two on History in every week is required from every Student But in cases where the Parents or Friends of the Students are anxious to obtain some diminution of their work they may obtain per- mission for them to absent themselves from one or other of the Special Lectures on application to the Principal The hours of work are so arranged that if the Junior Division attend the General Lectures on History on Mondays and Thursdays from If to the Special Lectures occupy from 2J to 3J on the same days and the Senior Division attend the General and Special Lectures on the English Lan- guage during the same hours For the better instruction of those who come to the College with little or no previous knowledge of History and Litera- ture the Junior Division has been sub-divided and class for beginners formed These attend the General Lectures with the other Students of the First Year but their Special Lectures are partly catechetical and the instruction given in them of more elementary kind At the examination in June Prize of Books and Certifi- cate of Honour are if merited given to the first and second Students respectively in the First Division of each of these sub- jects and Prize and Certificate of Approval to the first and second Students respectively in the Second Division No Scholar on the Inglis Foundation can afterwards obtain Prize in the same subject as that for which he gains the Scholarship
