annual report april 1859 41 increase of 160 over that of 1857 received relief in the Wards whilst 28 946 an increase of 371 over 1857 received assist- ance as out-patients It is worthy of remark as illustrating the immense boon conferred by this institution that the average period during which each of the 621 in-patients remained an inmate of the Hospital was 27 days the average cost of each patient being 31 10s 811 The Council can never speak too often or too strongly of the benefits conferred by King's College Hospital both as Public Charity and as School of Medicine Although the whole amount necessary for the new building has not been subscribed by the public the Committee have felt it best for the future interests of the Hospital to close the Building Fund by devoting thereto sufficient out of their available means to make the required 40 000 The con- tract for the whole of the works has now been taken and the building operations are already making great progress The Council have reason to hope that before the end of the year 1859 nothing will be left beyond grateful remembrance of its useful services of the old Parish Workhouse of St Clement Danes It is right to add that the Council after having given their earnest attention to the proposals made by Mr Cheere at the last Court to the effect that the College should contribute in various ways the further sum of 0001 to the Hospital felt compelled considering their own financial position to give an unwilling refusal to the appeal They have however consented to advance the sum of 500 on account of the Medical Pro- fessors and Officers who have begged to add this further sum to their already most noble contributions and to pay the same by instalments of 150 per annum Dr Major continues to report most favourably of the state of King's College School The Division viz that of Modern Instruction has fully kept up its numbers and its reputation Although the numbers in the Classical Division have undergone some diminution its reputation deservedly stands as high as ever
