36 annual report april 1859 As general preface to the following statement the Council have great pleasure in recording the Principal's assurance that the Students in all Departments have been regular in their attendance at Chapel and at the Divinity Lectures and that with one or two painful exceptions the conduct and diligence of all have been highly satisfactory The Theological Department keeps up its numbers and maintains its high character as sound and practical School of preparation for the Ministry suitable to the present wants of the Church of England The total number of Students who have received the Principal's Certificate during eleven years is 256 of whom 94 were placed in the First Class At the close of last Easter Term The Very Reverend Trench who had kindly retained the Professor- ship of the Exegesis of the New Testament notwithstanding his elevation to the Deanery of Westminster was compelled by the pressure of more immediate duties to resign bis Chair The loss was severely felt both by his colleagues and by the Theological Students The Council have done their best to repair it by electing the Rev Charles John Ellicott late Fellow of St John's College Cambridge to supply the vacancy They warmly congratulate the Court of Proprietors on securing the services of Divine who has already established the highest reputation in the branch of Theology committed to his care by series of exegetical commentaries on the Epistles of St Paul such as constitute new era in the Theological Literature of the Church of England The number of Students in the Department of General Literature and Science has fluctuated during the past year but it continues to send forth as well to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge as to other spheres of usefulness men well qualified to sustain the character of the College for learning and science At the University of Oxford Mr Charles Daniell former Student of this Department was placed in the First Class in the School of Literaj Humaniores at the last October
