annual report april 1858 49 His Grace the Visitor having omitted to fill up within six months of its occurring the vacancy made in the list of Life Governors by the death of Lord Radstock this duty has by the Charter devolved upon the remaining Governors who have accordingly elected one of the oldest and most respected members of the Council the Right Hon Sir John Patteson The Council have to express their profound regret that the last link which bound them to Bishop Blomfield has been broken by his death They had indulged the hope that although the state of his Lordship's health would no longer allow him to remain at their head they might still for some time enjoy the benefit of his co-operation as an elected Member of the Council When the Bishop's resignation of the See drew with it his resignation of the office which he had held for so many years to the high advantage of the College viz that of Chairman of the Council the Board entered resolution on their minutes of which the following is an extract "They desire to record their unfeigned thankfulness "for the service which during period of twenty-eight years Bishop Blomfield has been enabled to render to the College for the lively interest which he has taken in all the proceedings of the Council for his constant presence so far as the other claims upon his time would allow at their meetings for the kindness and wisdom with which he has guided their de liberations The Council can only here reiterate the sentiments em- bodied in this minute and put on record the affectionate gratitude with which they will ever regard the late Bishop's labours among them third vacancy has been created by the death of Richard Twining Esq Combining in his character the sagacity uprightness and munificence of the English Merchant with
