annual report april 1858 41 has undertaken efficiently to prepare officers for the staff ex- arainations and also thoroughly to instruct candidates for commissions in those branches of study more immediately relating to the military profession the knowledge of which will be required at the examinations for direct commissions or for entrance into the Royal Military College Sandhurst and the Military Seminary Addiscombe The Report of the Medical Department is highly satis- factory The falling off in the number of Matriculated Students mainly caused by reduction in the number of new Students which was alluded to in the Report of last year has proved as was then anticipated merely temporary The number of new Students entered last October greatly exceeds that of October 1856 and is even larger than the number in 1855 so that the recovery from the depression noted in the last Report has been complete The number of Occasional Students still continues to be less than it was in former years The Council have again the satisfaction of referring to the unusual number of competitors for the Junior Scholarships as evidence of the diligence and zeal of the new Students The number of such competitors exceeds that of any former year The long list of the Senior Students of the Department who have distinguished themselves at the University of London affords evidence of similar diligence and zeal on their part At the first examination for the Degree of the follow- ing gentlemen obtained Honours Anatomy and Physiology Chemistry Materia Medica and Pharmaceutical John Harlet Chemistry Structural and Physiological Botany Anatomy and Physiology ί Structural and Physiological Botany William Caylet Edmund Symes Thompson
