50 ANNUAL REPORT APRIL 1857 The Evening Classes which were first opened in October Term 1855 were continued during last winter with the same results as those recorded in the last Report Some of the members of these classes have become permanent Students of the College by Matriculation and others are preparing them- selves gradually for the Theological Department The conduct and diligence of all the Students have been unexceptionably good The Finances of the College show an excess of income over expenditure of 763 4s and to this extent the liabilities of the College have been decreased since the last Report Since the accounts of the year were made up the Council have received two legacies-one from the late James Messenger Esq of 174 I5s 0d net the other from the late John Hewitson Esq of 90 net these sums have both been in- vesied in further diminution of liabilities At the close of this Report see page 52 it is the intention of the Council to srive list of all the Legacies and Benefactions which from time to time have accrued to the College While it will thus appear how beneficial the existing endowments are it will be equally evident that these gifts are not by their number and import- ance as yet sufficient to relieve the annual income in any great degree from the burdens which fall upon it There is at present only one Professorship that of the Chinese Language and Literature with any endowment attached to it and with the exception of those Scholarships now to be established by the friends of Sir Robert 11 Inglis for the encouragement of the study of Modern History and English Literature the only Scholarships bearing on College work which derive support from other sources than the income of the College are to be found in the Medical Department Endowments in aid of any par- ticular Professorship or Scholarship would be of material assistance The following additional Proprietors of the College have since the date of the last Report converted each one share into donation whilst retaining all their other privileges they have for the future permanent benefit of the Institution
