annual report april 1857 ception by good order and regularity The average number has been much the same as in former years but from the unsettled state of the times and other causes Pupils have not remained in the School for so long period as formerly par- ticularly in that division which is assigned to those in prepa- ration for practical and commercial pursuits Dr Major himself conspicuous example of the qualities which he praises in others bears the strongest testimony to the assiduous attention of the Vice-Master and of the Masters in general and to the industry which pervades the classes as evinced by the excellent manner in which the Pupils have acquitted themselves in the Terminal Examinations As regards individual cases of proficiency evidenced by success beyond the College walls the following may be mentioned -Frede- rick Charles Griffith Griffin gained Scholarship at Lincoln College Oxford and Sydney Godolphin Alexander Shippard the Ireland Scholarship at Oriel At Cambridge Daniel Jones graduated as Fifteenth Wrangler Edgar Summers took First Class Honours in the Classical Tripos George Thomas Piper Streeter the same in Moral Philosophy Martin William M'Kellar and James Henry Hazell were elected Scholars of Christ's College To the above may be added the names of Alexander Cruikshank who gained Government Appointment in the Civil Service Department and William Holmes who ranked Fourth in the Examination for Engineers at Addiscombe The following changes in the Staff are mentioned in the order in which they occurred Mr James Swift has been appointed Assistant Arithmetical and Writing Master in the place of Mr Thomas Hutton Achille Leriche has succeeded Stievenard in the office of Third French Master The Rev Major having after eleven years' service vacated his office of Master of the Third Class in consequence of being appointed Head Master of the Grammar School at Thetford has been succeeded by the Rev Otto Adolphus of Corpus Christi College Cambridge
