KING'S COLLEGE HOSPITAL The Committee for the completion of King's College Hospital solicit attention to the following Statement This Hospital was founded in 1839 with the object of affording medical and surgical assistance to the suffering poor of that great Central District of London which lies between Holborn and the Thames It is the nearest Hos- pital to 400 000 of the very poorest of the inhabitants of London 388 w-patients and 25 564 Owi-patients re- ceived relief last year The old Parish Workhouse was in the first instance taken on lease repaired and fitted up by the Committee This building afforded in 1839 ample accommodation for the 834 in and out-patients of that year In the year 1849 the large increase of patients made it necessary to increase the accommodation and by the munificent generosity of au unknown friend to the Charity and other most noble gifts sufficient sum was raised to purchase an adequate site for very large building aud to complete about one-half of an entire New Hospital The Committee were for some time of opinion that the
