11 annual report april 1857 that the solution of many scientific problems if not accom- pushed will be greatly facilitated by the constant effort to bring this remarkable invention to perfection And indepen- dently of any such results the advantages offered by the study and practice of Photography in training Students to processes of scientific research as well as the observation of accurate form cannot fail of forming the eye and the mind to more exact habit of thought and observation The Council feel themselves fortunate in having secured for this Department the important services of Thomas Frederick Hardvvich Esq the first Daniell Scholar of the College The Military Department continues to offer an excellent education in the several branches of military science Many Students have very creditably passed their examinations for commissions and Major Griffiths reports that all those at- tending his classes have been regular and diligent During the last term four officers joined the class specially or- ganized for their instruction and in consequence of the promulgation of the late General Order by His Royal High- ness the Duke of Cambridge dated Horse Guards April 9th there is every reason to hope and anticipate that large number of the junior officers of the army will avail themselves of the means of preparing for the examination prescribed for obtaining staff appointments by joining the Officers' Class at the College as the subjects of instruction of this class coincide thoroughly with the acquirements demanded from candidates for staff appointments The attention of the Council will continue to be directed to this subject as they feel it will be of great importance to meet the views of His Royal Highness the General Commander- in-Chief by establishing and modifying when requisite the course of instruction for the Officers' Class in such manner as to merit the approbation of the military authorities and to advance the education of the officers of the British army In the Medical Department the number of Students in attendance has undergone scarcely any change the increase otOccasional Students having nearly equalled falling off which
