annual report april 1857 11 The Rev Watson having resigned the office of Mathematical Lecturer the Council have elected to that office Charles Elsee Esq Fellow of St John's College Cam- bridge and Third Wrangler in 1855 On the 28th of June last the Council received through William Salt Esq donation of 500 to be entered in the College books as small Memorial to the late Right Hon Sir Robert Harry Inglis Bart from one whose family loved him This sum together with others which might be con- tributed with the same object in view the Council resolved to apply towards the establishment and endowment of distinct Scholarship or Scholarships for the reward and promotion of merit in Modern History and English Literature The Council felt that these were precisely such studies as Sir Robert Inglis would himself have desired to encourage He was essen- tially an Englishman in every principle and every taste and it was felt that any testimonial to him ought to be intimately connected with the history and literature of that country which he loved so well and served so faithfully The Council are happy to report that nearly 000 has already been contributed towards these Scholarships whilst the letters which have been received even from some of those most opposed in opinion to Sir Robert Inglis prove how men of all classes value the example which be has left to posterity of steady and constant adherence to the highest principles The Council have since learnt the name of the gentleman to whose munifi- cence they are indebted for the gift of 500 which set this Memorial on foot and they have much pleasure in calling upon the Court to record their grateful thanks to George Monckton Esq of Somerford Hall Penkridge Subscriptions to this endowment are still received The object in view would be most satisfactorily obtained by 000 in all being contributed This sum invested in Consols would produce 120 per annum The Department of the Applied Sciences is keeping up its character both within the walls of the College and else-
