40 ANNUAL REPORT APRIL 1857 AT MATRICULATION In Mathematics and Natural Philo- Henry Nelson Capel sophy John George Wood In Classics The Rev Ο Hyman having resigned the office of Clas- gical Lecturer the Council have issued advertisements as usual inviting Candidates to come forward and they hope in short time to appoint Lecturer fully competent to dis- charge the duties of this important post but it will be diffi- cult to find any one who will excel the late Lecturer in point of high classical attainments Mr Heath well-qualified Associate of the College bas kindly undertaken to deliver lectures to the Class during the interval which must elapse before the time of election The Council have to regret the resignation of the Professor- ship of French by Brasseur gentleman who for upwards of twenty years has presided over that important branch of education with the greatest advantage to the College and School and with the highest credit to himself For some years Professor Brasseur has contributed to raise the reputa- tion of the College by enjoying the honour of being selected as Instructor to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and other members of the Royal Family Brasseur will carry with him in his retirement to his own country the respect and attachment of every member of the College and of the numerous generations of Students who have been successively entrusted to his care The Council have sought to perpetuate Brasseur's connexion with the College by electing him an Honorary Fellow To the Professorship thus vacated the Council have elected Mariette gentleman who had already discharged most satisfactorily the duties of Lecturer in the same subject Stievenard has been raised from his post of Third French Master in the School to that of Lecturer in the College Mr Richard Horton Smith Scholar of St John's College Cambridge kas been since elected
