ANNUAL REPORT APRIL 1856 47 Samuel Francis Creswell Scholar of St John's James Henry Hazell Scholar of Corpus William Ayerst Hulseaji Prize AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON Thomas Roscoe Rede Stebbino Scholarship in Classics Honours in Classics and James Heath Mathematics Gold Medal in Chemistry William Miller Ord Honours in Botany It may be added that Mr Henry Edmund Perkins obtained one of the appointments in the Examination for the India Civil Service in 1855 and that Robert Thaine was first in the list of Engineers in the recent Examination at Woolwich of those admitted last year into the Practical Class This list of distinctions gained in one year is probably un- precedented in any School in the United Kingdom and reflects in the estimation of the Council the very highest honour on Dr Major himself The Council cannot refer to the vacancy occasioned in their number by the lamented death of the Right Honourable Sir Robert Harry Inglis Bart without recording their deep sense of the loss which the College has sustained by that event Amongst the earliest and foremost promoters of King's Col- lege London Sir Robert Inglis by his constant attention to its interests has in an eminent degree contributed to its sue- cess His steady and consistent adherence to the great prin- ciples upon which it was founded his firm attachment to the doctrines and discipline of the Church of England his zeal for the advancement of useful knowledge in all its branches his extensive acquirements his cultivated taste his experience and accuracy in the transaction of business his sound judg- nient his conscientious consideration of every question which concerned the efficiency or reputation of the College all these combined with the most perfect candour kindness and cour- tesy rendered his services as member of the Council of ines- tunable value and entitle him to be had in grateful remem- brance by those who were his colleagues in administering the
