40 annual report april 1856 of their early advancement will have beneficial effect in stimulating their colleagues and encouraging them to pursue steadily the same course of conduct The gentlemen alluded to Mr Bell and Mr Forrest have been appointed First and Second Assistants and Interpreters at Bangkok in Siam with salaries of 405 and 324 respectively -" the Earl of Claren- don "-to use the words of the Under Secretary of State in announcing these promotions to the Principal -"having fixed upon these gentlemen for those newly-created places in con- sequence of the ability and intelligence which they have shown in the performance of their duties In connexion with the Department of General Literature and Science the Council have to announce the revival of the Professorship of the Principles and Practice of Commerce in the person of Mr Leone Levi who has been for some time engaged in delivering lectures on those subjects in the College The Council considered it due to the reputation which he had acquired no less than to the acknowledged importance of such instruction in commercial country to place him on the permanent staff of the College The new Professor has de- livered during the winter evenings Course of Lectures on Commercial and Banking Law which has attracted alarge class including the chief Managers of the principal banking firms During the past year Mr Henry AVilliam Watson Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge Second Wrangler and Smith's Prizeman in 1850 and formerly Mathematical Scholar of this College has been elected an additional Lecturer in Mathe- matics The Department of the Applied Sciences has received large accession to the number of its Students since the date of the last Report and there is every probability that the number may be still further increased in consequence of the contem- plated extension of railways and other engineering works not only in Russia and other parts of the Continent but also in the various dependencies of the British crown particularly in the East Indies in Canada and in Australia The Council are convinced that the system developed in this Department
