ANNUAL REPORT APRIL 1855 47 rewarded by these honours It is most gratifying to the Council to have it in their power to announce that the three gentlemen elected out of large list of Candidates Warneford Scholars in October last for proficiency in their previous education as shown by an examination in Divinity Classics History Mathematics and Modern Languages have just been elected out of the fifty-seven gentlemen who commenced their medical studies at the same period to the three Junior Medical Scholarships of the year which are awarded solely for proficiency in the studies of Anatomy Physiology and Chemistry Such result is very valuable as proving to the Students how intimately good early education is connected with success in after life The Council cannot close the account of the losses which their own body has sustained without adverting to the decease in ripe old age of Joshua Watson Esq another distinguished friend of the College who though not officially engaged in the conduct of its affairs took an active part in its foundation and watched over its progress with most affectionate interest to the very last As sound and highly-educated Churchman as belonging to that class of English laymen which is so peculiar characteristic of England Mr Watson foresaw the great importance of the structure which he helped to raise in relation to all classes of society-but in none of the objects of the Institution did he take more lively interest than in the endeavour to raise the tone of Medical Education and with this view he was liberal contributor to King's College Hospital as well as to the general designs of the College itself It is well known also that the particular form which Dr Warneford's benefactions assumed for the improve- ment of medical training was owing in no slight degree to the su2 estion of Mr Watson It is fitting that two such men dying as they did Within few days of each other should be associated in one Report They had been united for many years in the prosecution of one common end the honour and glory of God and in their deaths they were not divided During the last year the College has received legacy of
