46 ANNUAL REPORT APRIL 1855 to Demyship at Magdalen and Samuel Lilckendey Warren to Scholarship at Wadham At Cambridge Mr Edward Headland as already mentioned in speaking of the Department of General Literature and Science was 14th Wrangler At the University of London Mr John Easton gained Honours in Chemistry at the Examination for Matriculation This portion of the College has sustained severe loss in consequence of the death of Henry Worsley Esq who had filled the office of Professor of Landscape Drawing to the great satisfaction of the Council since the opening of the Division of Modern Instruction This appointment has been conferred on Philip Henry De La Motte Esq The Council desire to record their deep sense of the great loss sustained by the College during the past year by the death on the evening of the very day on Inch the Court last met of George Frere Esq who as Member of their body rendered most important services to the Institution by his constant attention to its business so long as his health per- mitted by his legal advice and assistance and in particular by the active interest which he took in the formation of the Theological Department Neither can the Council announce to the Court the death of another of their own body the Rev Samuel Wilson Warneford LL without acknowledging their gratitude for the benefits which in common with very many otherinstitutionsconnected with sound learning King's College London has from time to time received from their departed friend To his munificence they are indebted in addition to his very large contributions in aid of King's College Hospital given in special reference to its connexion as place of education with this College for donation of 1000 in the year 1838 for the establishment of Medical Prizes as well as for donation of 5000 in the year 1851 for the foundation of Medical Scholarships and these under the title of Warneford Prizes and Scholarships will long preserve the memory of his name not only within the College itself but wherever the successful Students may exercise the talents encouraged and
