annual report april 1855 43 The following Students of this Department have gained dis- tinctions at the University of London At the first Examination for the Degree of Bachelor in Medicine and in the branches of Anatomy and Physiology Mr Thomas Buzzard and Mr John Lumsdaine Propert took Honours At the second Examination Mr Frederick William Headland gained the Gold Medal in Physiology and Comparative Ana- tomy and took Honours in Medicine whilst Mr Henry Robert Silvester gained Honours both in Surgery and in Midwifery At the Bachelor of Arts' Degree Mr James Howard Thorn- ton gained the Prize in Animal Physiology and Honours in Chemistry At the Matriculation Examination Mr Alfred Woodward took Honours in Chemistry whilst in Botany Mr Rinso Robert Siccama gained the Prize and Mr Alfred Woodward took Honours Mr George William Lawrence gained the Gold Medal in Botany last year at the Apothecaries' Hall The great event of the year as connected with this Depart- ment has been without doubt the completion and opening of the first portion of the new Hospital The Council heartily congratulate the Court of Governors and Proprietors on having at length owing in no small degree to their own noble gift of 5000 seen the partial accomplishment of design which has cost so large an amount of trouble and anxiety The poor of the neighbourhood in which this College stands will receive very great advantage from the new building which is daily open and when it is considered that during the last month 400 persons have often received medical or surgical relief together with medicine wholly gratuitously on single day it is difficult to over-estimate the value of such charity The Professors and Students of the College will be also very largely benefited -ample space instead of crowded rooms -good ventilation instead of tainted air-light instead of darkness these are advantages appreciable by all but to none are they so important as to those engaged in the cure of disease or in learning the delicate structure of the human
