annual report april 1855 41 Majesty's Government the Professorship of Mathematics at the lioyal Academy at Woolwich Thomas Minchin Goodeve Esq of St John's College Cambridge and so long already connected with the College has been chosen to succeed him Mr Walter West Student of this Department took Honours in Mathematics at the Matriculation Examination of the University of London Major Griffiths reports very favourably with regard both to the conduct and diligence of the Students of the Military Department As was to be expected greater number of Students have attended the Classes of Fortification and Military Science this year than in any preceding year and now that public attention is much drawn to the subject of the education of the officers in the Army it is probable that this Department will meet with more success than has hitherto attended it Several of the Students who had distinguished themselves by their zeal and general proficiency in Military and other studies have been honoured by nominations to appointments in the Senior Class of the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich where they have already proved that the education received by them at King's College has well qualified them to compete with success for advancement in this branch of her Majesty's service It is hoped that the example thus set by one Department of the Government will ere long be the means of obtaining from the Commander-in-Chief Commissions in the Army for such Students as shall prove themselves qualified to pass very high examination From the Medical Department the report of the Principal and the Dean is more than usually satisfactory as to the con- duct and diligence of the Students The number of new Matriculated Students in October 1854 was 58 against 56 in the preceding year The number of old Students in attend- ance has been diminished in consequence of the large number of men of the 2d and 3d year who have after examination by the Navy Medical Board been appointed Dressers in the Baltic and Black Sea Fleets Most of these gentlemen however
