40 ANNUAL REPORT APRIL 1855 Appointments on the part of her Majesty's Commissioners for the affairs of India will take place in July and it is confidently hoped that several Candidates will be qualified to appear and do justice to the training they have received 1The Rev Brewer has been appointed to the offices of Professor of the English Language and Lecturer on Modern History in the room of the Rev Perowne resigned The Rev Ο Hyman Fellow of Wadham College Oxford has succeeded Mr Brew er in the office of Lecturer on Classical Literature Pearson Esq Fellow of Oriel College Oxford has been appointed Lecturer on the English Language The Department of the Applied Sciences continues fully to realize the expectations of the Council Both in numbers and in efficiency it has kept up its standard during the last year and the estimation in which its system of education is held in the manufacturing districts and in the great engineer- ing establishments of the country encourages the Principal in the belief that it will gradually take still more prominent place in the instruction of the large body of men intended for such occupations The exigencies of the war in which this country is now taking so prominent part have drawn many of those hitherto engaged in the peaceful studies of this Department into the public service and more especially into the practical Class in the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich with the view of becoming in due course officers in the Royal Engineers or Artillery Thus new opening has presented itself for the em- ployment of young men educated in this portion of the College The llev Matthew O'Brien having to the very great regret of the Council resigned the office of Professor of Natural Philosophy in consequence of having received from her Dr Dasent has since the date of this Report resigned the Professorship of "English Literature and Modern History Availing themselves of this oppor- tunity the Council have resolved to divide between two Professors the important subjects of this Chair and have appointed Mr Pearson to be Professor of Modern History and Mr Brewer to be Professor of the English Language and Literature
