ANNUAL REPORT APRIL 1855 37 diminished satisfaction to the Department of General Lite- rature and Science continuing as it does to fulfil its design under the able guidance of the Professors who have so long devoted themselves to the good of the College sufficient test of this well-doing is furnished by the honours awarded in the Universities to those who have laid the foundation of their scholarship and their science in this Department of King's College At the University of Oxford in the first public Examination under Moderators Mr Thomas Roscoe Rede Stebbing was in the First Class in Classics and Mr David Evans Norton occupied similar place at the final Examination in Mathe- matics At the University of Cambridge the following Students of this College appeared as Wranglers in the Mathematical Tripos viz -Mr Henry Stewart Drewry Mr Edward Head- land Mr Paulinus Aubrey Ninnis and Mr Charles Weston Devenish Mr Edward Ernest Bowen has been elected to Bell Scholarship Mr Francis James Candy was the only Middle Bachelor who took First Class in the Natural Science Tripos Mr Fitzroy Kelly and Mr Rolla Charles Meadows Rouse have been elected Scholars of Trinity In the University of London at the Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Laws Mr James Fitzjames Stephen was elected to Scholarship in the Principles of Legislation and took Honours in "Conveyancing whilst Mr Charles Boulnoistook Honours in three subjects viz -"Roman Law Conveyancing and the Principles of Legislation At Matriculation Messrs Frederick Bullock and John Farnham Messenger took Honours in Mathematics whilst in Classics the Exhibition was adjudged for the sixth succeeding time to Student of King's College viz -to Mr Edward Ernest Bowen Mr John Farnham Messenger and Mr Frederick Garrard also received Honours in Classics Mr William Stebbing former Student of this Department and who was placed last year in the First Class both in Classics and in the School of Law and Modern History has been elected an Honorary Fellow of this College
