annual report 1854 37 that the modifications just described have been effected without any increase of expense The Department of General Literature and Science continues to send forth body of well trained Students to the Universities and into the world At the University of Oxford former Students of the College have gained the following honours -William Stebbing has been placed in the First Class in Classics Charles Henry Pearson has been elected Fellow of Oriel College and two have just gained open Scholarships At the University of Cambridge the names of eight former Students of the College and School appeared as Wranglers in the Mathematical Tripos viz William Henry Brown Leslie Stephen Francis James Candy Alfred Godrich William Norton Lawson Edward Sturges Thomas Grabham and George Rawlinson Frederick William Farrer obtained First Class in Classics Henry Thomas Stephen Dicey obtained Second Class in the Moral Sciences Tripos and William Henry Brown Fellowship at Caius College and First Class in the Natural Sciences Tripos being distinguished in five dis- tinct subjects In the University of London Mr James Heath Junior Classical Scholar of 1853 obtained an Exhibition in Classics and took Honours in Mathematics Messrs James Anstie William Meymott Tidy and Brooke Lambert also received Honours in Classics The Professorship of English Literature and Modern His- tory has been entrusted to George Webbe Dasent Esq of Mag- dalen Hall Oxford The Rev Brewer having re- signed the office of Lecturer in the same subjects the Rev Perowne has been appointed in his place Mr Brewer conti- nues his valuable services as Lecturer in Classical Literature The Council wish to put on record their strong sense of the kindness with nc the Rev Dr McCaul the Rev Hall and the Rev Browne placed their services at the disposal of the Principal in the emergency occasioned by the vacancies before mentioned and of the devotedness to the
