34 The folloicing Report on the general state of the College was presented by th Council to the General Court of Governors and Proprietors held on Thursday April 27 1854 The Council of King5s College London have the honour to resent their Twenty-third Annual Report The year which has just elapsed though chequered by events of sorrowful character yields to none of those which have preceded it in the evidence which it bears to the stability of the College to the enlarged sphere of its public usefulness to its capabilities of continual expansion and above all to the soundness of the principles upon which with reference both to its present and to its prospective influence iu furthering sound education it avowedly depends Previously to reviewing the different departments of the College in detail the Council feel it to be incumbent upon them to record in grateful terms of acknowledgment the honour which was conferred upon the College by 111 Majesty the King of Hanover in attending the General Distribution of Prizes on the 27th of June in last year The lively interest manifested by His Majesty in the welfare of the Institution and in the success of each of the Prizemen individually as well as the gracious words of warning and encouragement which he addressed to the Students collectively will not be easily for- gotten by those who had the privilege of being present The following statement of the number in each Department of the College and in the School during the last Term is drawn up as usual upon the principle of reckoning only once the name
