12 MEDICAL DEPARTMENT With the completion of this part of the building many of the worst defects of the present Hospital will be at once remedied admirable accommodation will be provided for the daily increasing number of Out-patients whilst additional room for the sick and suffering poor with better accommodation for those attending upon them will be secured The Professors aud Medical Students of the College will receive immediate benefit from the completion of these works Fund available fur the New Building -The receipts of the curren year have been very small indeed the Committee have refraiued from making any great exertions in this direction The expenditure on the other hand has been unusually large And as the time approaches for finishing even the first portion of tlieir work the Com- mittee have good cause for believing that setting aside the L3 6j7 subscribed to Fund which iu accordance with the trust cannot be spent until £10 000 is made up they will require further sum of nearly £0 000 to complete fully what they have already undertaken This amount will cover the very heavy expenditure necessarily incurred in the foundation and which could not bo included in the contract osving to the nature of the ground and the utter uncertainty as to Ihe existence of disused wells and cesspools which have since been found in it This sum will include also the fittings fur the Chapel Gas Feucing raving Stoves Baths Royalty for Fox and Barrett's Fire Proof Floors Steam Engine Connexions between the Old and New Building Law Charges on the Act of Parliament and on the nineteen dif- fcreut purchases of land and houses Clerk of the Works and Architect General Summary It will thus appear that the Committee require at the present moment not less sum than £1000 י for the two great objects of carrying on the Hospital and completing the Building and with the view of raising this amount they have strongly urged upon that same body of Noblemen and Gentlemen who under the name of the "Building and Endowment Fund" Committee have collected so largely for the new Building to recommence their labours with the view both of supplying the urgent requirements of the general expenses as well as of furthering their own more immediate object Those Gentlemen have unanimously acceded to this request They have felt that the two objects aro in fact but one-that to further the building at the expense of the daily charge for provisions &c or vice versa is in fact to postpone the full accomplishment of their own great work and they have therefore resolved to unite frith this Committee in making one grand and urgent appeal to the friends of the charity The work to be accomplished is well worthy of any expenditure of money time trouble or anxiety which it may cost those who embark in it It is further matter of congratulation that Mr Cunniugham to whose zeal
