medical depart μ ent XVII King's College Hospital This Hospital which is situated in the immediate neigh- bourhood of the College and in the midst of densely-popu- lated neighbourhood is furnished with every means of practical instruction and all the Offices are conferred on Pupils of the College after due examination The following is the Fifteenth Annual Report of the Com- mittee of Management presented to the Court of Gover- nors Feb 24 'j The Committee of Management beg to lay before the Court of Governors account of their proceedings for the last year They will divide their remarks under two distinct heads -General Affairs In-patients -The number of In-patients has increased by 13S thus marking in an important manner the increasing necessity for enlarged accommodation Out-patients -The pressure of Out-patients has been 80 great that the Committee have hid under their most serious consideration the necessity for takiug steps for limiting the number They would deeply regret adopting sucli measure but the enormous pressure at present thrown on the medical officers together with the increasing expenditure for Drugs &c seem almost to point out that the time must come for some change in the present system of unrestricted admission The Court will hear with astonishment that not less than 550 Out-patients not unfrequently'present themselves on eiugle day though the whole number in 1853 was not quite so large as in 1852 Receipts -The receipts of the last year have been upwards of £300 less tbau those of the preceding year the deficiency arising in the item of Donations The Annual Subscriptions have increased by £32 Legacies -The following bequests have beeu made and are most gratefully acknowledged £1G3 Os tid by the late Miss Rayner This amount has been received by the Treasurer £1 500 by the late William Paine Esq not yet paid Expenditure -The Court will not be surprised to hear that the great increase which has taken place in the price of all articles of consumption has very decidedly operated to increase the expenditure The demands on the Charity both for food and medicine have been larger this year than in any preceding year The Committee have however lately caused very strict investigation to be made into the causes which in each case have led to the increase of expenditure and they have appointed Standiug Sub-Committee
