11 annual iiκ port 18 At Oxford- Martin Howv Irving has gained First Class in Classics and Second Class in Mathematics Frederick Harrison also has gained First Class in Classics William Stebbing as already mentioned was in the First Class in Moderations At Cambridge- Burford Waring Gibsone Frederick Garde Fleay Evan McLaurin Smith and Henry Ware who after- wards joined the General Literature Department of the College appeared in the list of Wranglers whilst Henry Ware was also in the First Class of the Classical Tripos George Schrader took First Class degree in Law At the University of London-Burford Waring Gibsone appeared in the list of Mathematical Honours at the Degree and Thomas ltoscoe lteid Stebbing for six years Pupil in the School was in the list of Classical honours at the Matriculation examination Dr Major also mentions that Boswell Hensman one of his former Pupils received the first prize in the Examination for Honours at Gray's Inn in Real Property and Equity The results of the new Division of Modern Instruction may not be so striking and patent to the world as those of the Division of Classics inasmuch as boys educated therein are for the most part intended for less public but not less import ant pursuits than those brought up with the view 6f proceed ing to one of the Universities The success which this department has met with is however most marked and every day serves to convince the Council more and more that the steps which they took in the beginning of 1851 to open up more widely the benefits of distinctively modern and prac- tical education were based on sound principles This Depart- ment of the School is much indebted to Mr Fearnley's great experience and untiring energy The Rev Joseph Edwards having after twenty-two years' service resigned his oflice of Master in the School the Couu- cil have selected James John Heywood Esq Scholar of Trinity College Cambridge to the vacancy thus occasioned The Council cannot record the death of His Grace the Duke of Wellington one of the Life-Governors of this
