annual report 1853 37 avocations out of London to resign the Chair of Geology to which he was elected in 1840 This appointment has not yet been filled up In the Military Department the Council have to report the resignation of Captain Walker their first Professor of Military Science who has been promoted to similar post of high distinction at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst sufficient proof of his high qualification for the appointment which he has held with so much advantage to the Miliiarv Students of this College Captain Frederick Augustus Griffith Royal Artillery an officer of high professional dis- tinction and who has had much experience in Military in- struction has been appointed to the vacant office and the Council entertain no doubt that his great energy and talent will enable them to realize the expectations which led to the formation of this Department The Medical Department continues to give the highest satisfaction to the Council Year after year they have the pleasure of knowing that the results of the religious and pro- fessional training pursued in this College arc not only making themselves felt amongst their own Students but throughout the world It is difficult to conceive public Institution capable of conferring greater benefits on mankind than the Medical School of this College Its benefits are not limited to the actual Students nor to the present time nor are they confined to its own localit The Medical Student educated in this Institu- tion carries with him often to the most distant regions of the earth the religious principles the skill and the knowledge here acquired and none can estimate the amount of influence en- trusted to his care With these feelings the Council have learnt Avith great pleasure from the Chaplain that the attend- ance upon his lectures and the results of his several exami- nations have been most satisfactory indeed that in one term the answers sent in by Medical Students were compara- tively better than those of any other Department of the College It is satisfactory to remark that whilst bv the rules
