G annual report ISoo those announced last year exhibit no material change but they serve to show that as the old Students leave the College in order to enter upon the active duties of their profession others are found ready to supply their place The combined effect of the theoretical and practical instruction which is im- parted to the Students of this Department added to the indu- ence which religious training exercises upon their character has been recognised bv Engineers of the highest eminence In these days of material progress it appears to the Council matter of first-rate importance not only to this country but to the rest of the civilized world that succession of men should go forth from King's College not only profession- ally well qualified but actuated by the highest principles of Christian duty former Student of this Department Charles James Barry took honours in Mathematics at the Matriculation exami- nation at the University of Loudon It is with sincere regret that the Council advert to the loss Which this Department in common with the scientific world at large has sustained in the death of Mr Ldward Cowper at first Lecturer and then Professor of Manufacturing Art and Machinery It was the great aim of Mr Cowper's life to devote his varied talents and experience to the furtherance of one great object viz -the widest possible diffusion of education in the practical application of science and nowhere did he find sphere more congenial to his taste or more fitted to the execution of his design than in the Chair which he occupied in this College The Students will long remember the accuracy and extent of his knowledge his skill in manipu- lation the force and variety of his illustrations and the manly eloquence of his language and delivery The Council have much satisfaction in reporting that they have found as they believe no unworthy successor to this Chair in Mr Thomas Minchin Goodeve who has already for some years given the College the benefit of his large scientific attainments as Lecturer in Mathematics The Council regret to announce that Mr David Thomas Ansted has been compelled by his numerous aud increasing
