annual report 1853 illustrate more clearlv than this the excellence of the system pursued as it bears not only on the cultivation of the highest talents but also on the due proportionate development of all degrees of ability The names of the Wranglers from this Department were Edward Wilson William Dundas Gardiner Jsaac Taylor Henry Ware Henry Arthur Morgan Henry Thomas Stephen Dicey George Heppel Hopson Pickney Walker Henry Fortey and Samuel Green In the Classical Tripos Henry Ware was placed in the First Class and II Τ Dicey in the Second Class At the University of London-Frederick William Farrar received Scholarship in Classics and George William Hewitt Fletcher appeared in the list of Mathematical Honours at the Degree At the Matriculation examination Robert James Donne was elected Exhibitioner in Classics and Tho- mas Koscoe Rede Stebbing-whose name is again referred to in latter part of this Report -Charles Alabaster William Henrv Hvde and Bevcrsham llarman were in the list of Honours whilst in Mathematics Henry Stewart Drewry Thomas Henry Candy and John Dennis Tucker took honours Upon review of the academical success here recorded and particularly in reference to the unprecedented distinctions obtained in the Mathematical Tripos at Cambridge -the Council consider it due to the Professors of this Department to express thus publicly the high sense which they entertain of their services The only changes which have taken place this year in the list of Professors of this Department are the appointment of the Rev Juan Calderon as Professor of Spanish in the room of Mr Curtoys the state of vhose health made it necessary for him to leave England and the election of Mr James Summers as Professor of Chinese in succession to Mr Fearon Avhose term of office had expired Mr Henry Charles Angelo has succeeded his late father as Professor of Fencing The Department of the Applied Sciences appears to call for no very special remark The numbers as compared witli
