34 annual report Easter twenty-two Certificates entitling the recipients to the same position with respect to Ordination as is afforded by do- gree at either of the Universities were granted by the Principal making in all since the year 1848 no less than 106 who but for the benefits afforded them in this College Mould have been for the most part excluded from Holy Orders The Principal speaks most favourably of the character and progress of those who are still under training It is with the utmost satisfac- tion that the Council report that the Bishops who have been pleased to recognise the Principal's Certificate continue to evince undiminished confidence in the soundness of the in- Struction imparted and that notwithstanding the changes which have taken place in the Episcopal body since the foundation of the Department the number of Bishops lu are willing to accept the College Certificate continues the same as at the opening of the course -viz 26 two Bishops only for local reasons declining to accept the Certificate The Rev McCaul having resigned the office of Leo- turer in Divinity was succeeded for one term by the Rev David McAnally and permanently by the Rev Henry James Clarke formerly Theological Student of the College The Department of General Literature and Science maintains its high character for scholarship and scientific eminence both in the College itself and in the results of its labours as tested by the Universities At Oxford the following gentlemen have distinguished them selves -Peter Goldsmith Medd was placed in the First Class in Classics and has been elected Fellow of Universitv College Charles Henry Pearson was also placed in the Fust Class in Classics and William Stebbing appeared in the First Class in the newly-instituted Second Year Examination called Moderations At Cambridge-out of twenty-six former Students of the College and School who took their degree at the last Bachelor of Arts Commencement no less than twenty-four appeared in the list of Mathematical Honours of whom thirteen ui Wranglers and nine were Senior Optimes Mo fact could
