ANNUAL REPORT 1852 29 of the University of Durham and Henry Frederick Long has taken First Class at the same place whilst Edward Tucker Howell and William Savery Cotton have matriculated in honours at the University of London long list of College Scholarships and Prizes might be added The Council have the painful duty of naming to the Court the decease of the Rev James Endell Tyler member of their own body From his first connexion with the College Mr Tyler zealously and effectually worked to promote its best interests he attended the Meetings of the Council and of the different Sub-Committees with the utmost regularity and his loss is deeply felt and lamented It will be proposed to-day to elect Sir Walter Buchanan Riddell Bart long an effective Member of the Committee of Management of King's College Hospital to fill up the vacancy thus occasioned Amongst the various Donations to the Libraries and Museums received this year list of which will be found appended the Council would particularly refer to valuable collection of about 500 Osteological Specimens from Mr Bellamy of Plymouth and case containing 350 samples of raw produce from the Hon East India Company being portion of the magnificent collection displayed by them at the Great Exhibition In conclusion the Council desire to refer all the past success of the College in all its Departments to the blessing of the Giver of all Good to whom alone they commend its future welfare in the humble hope that the same blessing may rest in increasing measure upon the Institution so long as it remains true to its avowed principle-that of cultivating every branch of secular knowledge in subordination to the only knowledge which can sanctify intellectual exertion in any condition of life
