annual report 1852 23 expired this chair is at present vacant but the Council intend shortly to take measures to fill up the vacancy The number of Students in the Department of the Applied Sciences is increasing and their conduct and progress in their studies are fully commensurate with the great advantages offered by sound system of scientific and practical education to class of men whose character and attainments are be- coming incalculably important to the welfare and progress of the civilized world At the last Matriculation Examination of the University of London William Grain and Thomas Bolton were both highly distinguished This seems proper place to record the fact that no less than one hundred and eleven persons Students of this Depart- ment and others attended the practical Lectures delivered by Professor Cowper Professor Ansted and Professor Tennant at the Crvstal Palace last summer The state of the Medical Department continues to be highly satisfactory and its prospects very encouraging The number of Students in attendance in the several Classes is larger than at any former period The Matriculated Students have slightly and the Occasional Students largely increased Since the date of the last Annual Report no less than two hundred and fifty-three Students of both Classes have been entered on the books of which number two hundred and thirty-nine have been in attendance during the Winter Session which has just come to close The conduct of the Students continues to meet with the approval of the authorities of the College and discipline is admirably preserved Unusually large additions have been made to the Museums and in this respect the College has had its full share of the benefits which the Great Exhibition of last year was calculated to confer on places of education possessed of collections in Natural History and Experimental Science The Council have the gratification of announcing another act of considerate munificence spontaneously extended to this
