annual report 1851 31 During the past year two of the earliest friends of the College and Members of the Council have been removed by death viz the Right Hon the Vice-Chancellor of England Sir Launcelot Shadwell and the Right Hon the Lord Bexley The Vice-Chancellor was always ready as far as his time permitted to give the Council the benefit of his sound practical advice upon all points of difficulty that might arise The Council cannot refer to the death of Lord Bexley without publicly recording their high sense of the services which he rendered to this College at its formation and which so long as health was entrusted to him he continued to render to themselves by his regular attendance at their meetings and of their just appreciation of the value of the support which his name and character gave to King's College during the whole period of his connexion with it His Grace the Visitor has as testimony of the sense of obligation due to Sir Robert Harry Inglis Bart for the warm interest which he has so long taken in the concerns of the College conferred upon him the office of Governor for Life vacant by Lord Bexley's death The vacancy thus made upon the Council it will be proposed to fill up with the name of the Rev Samuel Wilson Warneford one of the earliest and most munificent friends of the College It will be remem- bered that Dr Warneford some years ago gave the sum of 000 to found prizes in divinity for the students in the Medical Department and during the last year he has given 500 to the fund which is being raised for the new Hospital to be expended in such manner as shall best promote collegiate discipline amongst the Medical Students The other vacancy in the Council it will be proposed to fill up with the name of Richard Twining Esq another early and most generous friend of the College and Hospital
