ANNUAL REPORT 1851 29 office Mr Fearnley waived all claim to an increase of his salary The Rev William Webster late Master of the Middle Sixth Class has kindly transferred his valuable services to this Division of the School The new Division opened in January with 128 Pupils many of whom bat for this alteration would have left the School to seek elsewhere the instruction they required And its working thus far has been perfectly satisfactory In the course of the investigation which preceded these resolutions it appeared that there was room for great improve- ment in the old Division of Classics Mathematics and General Literature From the want of sufficient adjust- ment between the various subjects of instruction portion of each class was at certain hours obliged to quit the school- room while the Classical lesson was still proceeding in order to attend Mathematics Arithmetic German or Drawing The inconvenience has been entirely obviated by providing that the whole of this Division should be employed on Mathe- matics or Arithmetic as the case may be at one and the same time during four afternoons in each week and that the instruction in German and in Drawing should be given after the regular school-hours With view to the encourage- ment of Mathematics this Division has been distributed for the purposes of Mathematical and Arithmetical instruction into as many distinct classes as there are Classical classes each Pupil to find his place therein according to his pro- ficiency in Mathematics and Arithmetic With the view of providing for more effective instruction in German for the new Division the Council have found it necessary to appoint new German Master and they have selected the Rev Albert Wintzer who has for many years proved himself most valuable assistant to Dr Bernays Professor Worsley has succeeded Mr Cotman in the charge of the Drawing Classes as already mentioned The following University distinctions have been gained by former Pupils of the School -At Oxford the Lusby Scholar- ship was obtained by George Winter Price the Divinity
