annual report 1851 25 Frederick Hardwich elected Scholar of this College on the Daniell Foundation in 1850 Mr John Eddowes Bowman who has for many years most ably filled the office of Demonstrator of Chemistry has lately been appointed Professor of Practical Chemistry and has been succeeded in his former office by Mr Hardwich The Council have the satisfaction of adding that these appointments will not be attended with any additional expense to the College The reputation of King's College Hospital is fully main- tained by the untiring energy of Thomas Godfrey Sambrooke Esq the Deputy Chairman and of the Committee of Manage- ment and by the zeal and efficiency of its Medical Officers Its usefulness is daily more and more felt in proportion to the extended benefits which it confers on the suffering poor The number of In-patients cannot be increased in the present building "All ike beds are always full and there is no room for more" Those who are engaged in the duties of the Hospital daily feel the painful inconveniences that arise from its insufficient accommodation and applicants in great suffering are often of necessity refused admittance The Committee have availed themselves of an adjoining house purchased for the site of the new Hospital to provide increased though still very insufficient accommodation and classification for the Out-patients the number of whom has in 1850 increased by 16 000 as compared with 1841 and by 167 as compared with 1849 The Council regret to learn tjiat the excess of liabilities over Assets on the 31st December last which has to be pro- vided for out of the income of the present year had not- withstanding every regard to economy increased to Ā£690 8s 5d This deficit is unsatisfactory and exertions to raise the amount of the deficiency would be thankfully acknowledged Since the last Annual Court much progress has been made towards the important object of the erection of new Hospital The munificent commencement of the Building and Endow- ment Fund was announced at that time The Subscriptions now
