annual report 1851 23 Governors and Proprietors will join with them in conveying their best thanks to Mr Stutzer for the great interest in the welfare of the College which he has thus displayed by so munificently promoting this particular branch of study The Department of the Applied Sciences is in highly satisfactory state The discontinuance of other Schools of Engineering gives rise to the expectation that the number of those who will take advantage of the admirable course of instruction here provided may be considerably increased The Medical Department has during the past year received very considerable addition to its numbers and was never in more flourishing state The improved system of discipline which has now been in force for nearly two years is found fully to answer the expectations of the Council and it will shortly receive further development so soon as the system of marking the attendance on lectures shall be extended to the clinical instruction given at the Hospital Not the least among the advantages to be anticipated from the erection of new Hospital will be the increased facilities afforded for completing that collegiate system which the Rev Dr Warneford and several of the most munificent subscribers to the charity are so desirous of promoting The pupils of the Medical School still continue to maintain and extend its reputation not less by their exemplary conduct than by their proficiency in their medical studies During the past year Mr Headland has obtained gold medals for Botany and for Materia Medica both at the Society of Apothecaries and at the University of London In Divinity during the past year the arrangements for im- parting instruction to the Medical Students have undergone an important revision Hitherto since the foundation of the Department these Students have been associated in the Divinity Lectures delivered by the Principal with the Students of the Department of General Literature and Science The inconveniences which arose from this classification though they would not be much felt when the numbers in the two
