applied sciences 03 MiNeralogY Willi view to facilitate the study of Geology and of the Application of Mineral Substances in the Arts The Lectures will begin on the 9th of October 1850 and be continued on each succeeding Wednesday till the Christmas vacation after which they will be resumed and terminate about the end of March The Course commences with description of the Physical and Chemical characters of Minerals in general Physical -Crystallization Cleavage Fracture Hardness Chemical -Use of the Blow-Pipe Action of Acids &c The principal simple Minerals are next separately con- sidered and the readiest mode of distinguishing them described The Course of instruction includes minute description of all the substances entering into the composition of Rocks and of those minerals which are also used in the Arts illustrated by an extensive collection of characteristic specimens and diagrams of the principal crystalline forms &c XI Engineering Workshop The arrangements in the Workshop and the instruction given are intended to afford the Student means of becoming practically acquainted with the several details of Construction the knowledge of which is required in Civil Engineering com- prising the different methods of Preparation and Joining which are used in Wooden Constructions as Roofs Bridges and general Frame-work and the several processes in constructing Ma- chinery beginning with Foundry Patterns and including the operations of Moulding Casting Forging Turning Screw- Cutting &c as at present conducted After sufficient practice in these different branches the Student is prepared to con- struct model of any of the various machines and engines in use in illustration of the plans at present adopted At the termination of the year Prize is given in the
