MEDICAL DEPARTMENT 123 Oiit-Palients 21 0-1-8 of that class of patients have been relieved being GG5 more than in any previous year 261 have been admitted to the beds and 4-24 poor married women have been attended in their confinement at their own homes The Committee regret they are again under the necessity of informing the Governors that the debt with which the year 1849 commenced has increased owing to the expenses attendant upon the reception of Cholera cases the deficiency now amounts to 530 sum not sufficiently large to cause any em- barrassment but rendering the exertions of the friends and supporters of the Hospital necessary to prevent its increasing During the year the Donations have increased oxer those of last year 107 and the Annual Subscriptions 75 The amount raised by Charity Sermons has again fallen short the Committee gratefully acknowledge the services rendered by those who have advocated their claims and their gratitude is equally due to those who have kindly placed their pulpits at the disposal of the Committee who again urge all their friends to render assistance in procuring as many pulpits as possible for Sermons not only for the benefit they confer upon the unds but also for the extension they give to the knowledge of the existence of the Hospital Only one Legacy has been received since the last Report viz 20 from the late It Giraud Esq The Committee have at length the gratification of informing the Governcrs that the prospect of possessing an Hospital more suitable to the wants of the neighbourhood and the Pupils attending the Medical School appears not so distant as they feared when they met the Governors last year In consequence of the generous offer of an Anonymous Individual under the name of Friend of the Hospital to subscribe on certain conditions 000 towards Building and Endowment Pund Committee has been formed under the title of the Building and Endowment Puud Committee con- sisting of Members of the Council of King's College Members of the Com- mittee of Management and other Gentlemen and in addition to the munificent offer above named of 000 similar sum has been contributed by the Council of King's College these together with several large Donations now amount to 22 000 exclusive of the sum of 000 and upwards collected upon former occasion which Jast sum has been expended upon the purchase of the Grange Estate and your Committee have the satisfaction of stating that the liability which Dr Budd Dr Todd Mr Pergusson and Mr Sambrooke had incurred in the completion of that purchase will now be relieved and it is hoped that before many months expire the commencement of portion of the new Hospital will be proceeded with It is proposed to hold Pestival consisting of Meeting in the morning and Dinner in the evening on the 15th May for the joint purposes of Building and Endowing and of the support of the Hospital and it is earnestly hoped that every friend and supporter of the Hospital will on that occasion
