MEDICAL DEPARTMENT 109 tempted into more prolonged neglect of their duties am happy to be able to state that in the discharge of the respon- sible duties thus imposed upon me have never in any single instance had reason to complain of the spirit in which these necessary measures were received In all cases of difficulty have enjoyed the great advantage of being able to take counsel not only with my own colleagues but also with the Committee of Discipline which meets regularly every week To my esteemed friends the Chaplain the Censor and the Tutor of the College who with myself constitute that Committee my best acknowledgments are due In all cases of importance have sought the advice and approval of the Rev the Principal whose anxiety for the welfare of every department of this College is equalled only by his unwearied efforts to promote it and by the uniform kindness and courtesy with which he performs the multifarious duties of most onerous and re- sponsible position In the Report of last year the College was congratulated on the honours which our Pupils had achieved at the University of London am happy to state that in this respect too the Report of the present year is most favourable The only exhibitions given at the first examination for the degree of at the London University are held by two King's College Students four out of thirteen prizes were gained by the same parties and nearly half of all the places in honours were filled by them or by other pupils of the College In the second examination for and in the matriculation examination pupils of the College also distinguished themselves In the competition for the prizes awarded by the Society of Apothe- caries they have been equally successful the gold medal for Botany and the gold and silver medals for Materia Medica having been gained bythe same gentlemen who had already achieved distinction at the University of London It is most gratifying to the Medical Professors of this College to find that those who have been successful in the competition for Prizes and Scholarships in this place are able to maintain their repu- tation in that larger competition which embraces all the
