108 MEDICAL DEPARTMENT IV JBetrical department Report on the state of this Department made by Professor JiapaMB the Dean at the Distribution of Prizes April 20 1850 His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Chair My Lord Archbishop -It gives me great satisfaction in this my first year of office to be able to present to your Grace statement of the condition and prospects of the Medical De- partment of this College in perfect keeping with the Reports of my predecessors for many years past Our numbers have again increased our new Students matriculated and occa- sional and the entries to the Hospital are more numerous and the total of pupils in attendance on the several classes is greater than at the same period of last year The comparison is equally satisfactory when it is made to embrace series of years Our means of instruction have kept pace with this increase of our numbers and our system of discipline has also tinder- gone progressive improvement During the Session which has just come to close some very important changes have been introduced with view to the still further improvement of that system The Council at whose express desire these changes were made will be gratified to learn that they have worked well can safely affirm that at no former period has our knowledge of the character and conduct of our Students been so complete our checks on inattention so efficient or the behaviour of the Students in every respect so satisfactory In carrying out the recent regulations of the Council it has been my constant endeavour to promote the convenience and comfort of the Student to keep the parent or guardian fully informed of the degree in which he avails himself of the in- struction provided for him to check by timely remonstrance any tendency to inattention which may show itself and hy measures conceived in spirit of kindness and consideration to reclaim to better course the few who may have been
