MEDICAL DEPARTMENT 97 each winter session the Professors meet for the purpose of conferring with each other and reporting to the Dean and through him to the Principal the condition of the various classes over which they preside -and in this way every im- portant characteristic of each Pupil is familiarly known That such system as this must receive the approbation of parents and those who are interested in the welfare of youth cannot be doubted and it gives me peculiar satisfaction to state that the Pupils themselves who are well aware of our custom look upon it with all becoming respect and feel that it is intended solely for their advantage In community so laVge and constituted solely of young men not yet experienced in the ways of the world it cannot but be that some require the needful check of authority and it falls to the lot of the Dean to communicate with those who seem to require either the warning hint of friend or the more severe censure of the Official In whichever way it has been my duty to act there has invariably been that deference paid to the Dean's autho- rity which characterizes the actions of man in every well- regulated community The Professors have every reason to be Avell pleased with the progress which the Pupils at present in attendance are making in the acquisition of professional knowledge At recent Meeting held for the purpose of deciding upon the prize-men there was general impression that the answers to the questions on all subjects and in all departments of Medicine had been exceedingly satisfactory That this impression was not the result of partiality is proved by the fact that the largest number of first-class prize-men at the latest examina- tions for honours in the University of London -examinations open to pupils from ail the schools in Britain -came from King's College have now to offer to the Council our cordial thanks for the excellent arrangements which have been made for our accommodation within these walls Our Theatres our Mu- seums and our arrangements generally are excellent and we willingly admit that whatever imperfections there may be in
